Hilary Kennelly of the West Wales Museum of Childhood says sex has always been a funny phenomenon in the toy industry.In the 1950s and 1960s,when she was a little child, she remembered the girls playing the dolls while the boys were playing the car. She said: “For centuries no one thought of this,boys play toys of boy, girls play toys of girl.” Later, people began to protest, but until the 1960s of feminist movement really impact this thinking. Since then, toy designers have been very confused. She added:“Gendered indeed become a minefield of toys”.
Social media, there is a campaign against the sex of toys, include “Let Toys Be Toys”. It disclosed the sale of sex toys and enterprise store name, especially when the toys and industry-related toys are automatically placed in the “boy toy” area. The campaign calls for the toy and publishing industry to stop “promote some books that apply only to girls, and other toys that only apply to boys to limit children\'s interest.” Instead, it requires retailers, book sellers and manufacturers to categorize toys and books through themes and functions.
“Mnay time, the store will put the toys that the girls may play in the boy toy area, but they will not put the boys playing the toys on the girls\' toy shopping area,” Hilary said. Elizabeth Lloyd-Parkes, senior lecturer in marketing at the University of South Wales, said in his doctoral thesis that there is a complication in the fact that children, as consumers, have no disposable income, and ultimately make decisions for adults.
“We will shop in areas where they feel comfortable, and we all know that manufacturers and marketers will decide to start with the survey audience,” she says. “They may be in order to meet their parents expected, this is the most difficult to break. And I think this problem already exists for some time.”
She continues to add that there are already some shops making efforts to challenge the use of the theme to toys, rather than sex.
